We were saddened to learn that one of our favorite annual events, the MLK Celebration at Gettysburg College was cancelled due to COVID-19. Instead of performing at the College's Chapel this year, we will be premiering our hard work right here on this page.

The theme of our concert is “Be The Change.” This comes from one of the pieces the children’s choir will perform, composed by Troy Robertson and arranged by our very own students! With so much turmoil in our world, we thought it best to explore with our singers various ways we can affect change. With that in mind, each piece we prepared explored legacies of important change agents in history like Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Jr., John Lewis, Ruth Bader Ginsberg, Nina Simone, and Sam Cooke, to name just a few. We have also been discussing in rehearsals how we can "be the change [we] wish to see in the world": in our families, schools, communities, and beyond. During our concert you will not only hear beautiful music, but you will also hear from our students about the meaning behind the songs.

The day after our concert is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, and while many school students and families have the day off, we hope that our concert will inspire people to make it a day ON! To facilitate this, we are partnering with the Peace and Justice program and the Center for Public Service at Gettysburg College to highlight initiatives in our community and to inform our audience members on how best to advance the causes of justice nearby.

In celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the community is invited to purchase a yard sign to share the impactful words of this great leader. Proceeds from the sales will go to the Adams County Career Aid Project scholarships. Signs can be pre-ordered at $10 per sign through this online Google Form. Pick up of the signs will begin the week of January 4th during normal business hours at the YWCA front desk.
